I stubbed my toe this morning after falling out of bed,
and choked on my two aspirin meant to sooth my aching head.
I fell into my bureau while I was slipping on my drawers
and then I straight face-planted down head-first upon the floor.
My comb ripped knots and tangles while pulling out my hair
and the band of my elastic snapped when I caught my underwear.
The sting had barely fazed me when it pulled and slammed the door
that pinched my little finger and it smarted that’s for sure.
I cut myself while shaving and the aftershave did sting
I bumped my head on the countertop while picking up my ring.
I tripped over my shoes and I was back down on the floor.
I’m sure I can survive the day, if I make it out the door.

My head’s a little warm today and think I’ve got the chills…
My throat is somewhat scratchy and I don’t like the way it feels.
Come to think about it, there’s an itching in my spine,
My hands are cold and clammy, palms are sweaty all the time.
There’s a tingling in my fingers and my ears are feeling numb…a twitching in my
forehead and a prickling in my thumbs.
My nose just started running and I think I’ve caught a cold…
I’ve gotten flue-like symptoms or an allergy to mold!
I could think up some more problems if you’d give me some more time,
but other than this little list, I’d say I’m feeling fine!

I don’t wanna do my homework,
I don’t wanna do my chores,
I don’t wanna pick my toys up from my boring bedroom floor!
I wanna sit around a while and do just what I feel…
To stay right here, to daydream
and forget about what’s real.

It’s Labor Day afternoon and clouds
hide away the sun
I sit inside my room and think of the autumn
days to come.
Summertime has gone away and so has all the fun
I wished this day would speed away,
and the rain had just begun.

Patiently I’m waiting, trying my hardest to keep still…
If I don’t move a muscle soon, I think I might turn ill.
My legs just started shaking and my fingers tapping too…
I’ve shaded all my doodles and picked at all the glue.
I’ve folded up my paper into origami art,
I’ve counted up those ceiling tiles and took all my pens apart.
I can’t sit still forever… I don’t know what I’ll do!
COME ON LET’S GET A MOVE ON…
WHEN WILL IT ALL BE THROUGH?

(Inspired by a Sunday Sermon by the Rev. Dr. Mark Stauffer)
I’ve walked many miles through the wilderness
and witnessed things strange to behold.
I’ve searched high and low for enlightenment with stories left better untold.
It seems I’ve been plodding forever, through perilous forests of sin.
The road stretches out wide before me, for this journey has yet to begin.
The sun shining bright on my shoulders, it’s blinding light scorches my skin.
This road rises further than ancient Palestine and it’s namesake so deadly within.
The bending and winding seem endless,
with many miles left to unfold.
There’s many a danger and cold-blooded stranger,
here on the Jericho Road.
These fellows that walk along side me, weren’t there just a moment ago…
and they give me a feeling like thieves up to stealing
and I shiver as if from the cold.
In a moment they sped right on by me, without turning an eye toward a soul.
Casting their gaze as if in a haze, how the rich never notice the low.
These bastions of amity truly show no humanity,
kicking dust on the dying man lying below.
The treasure they’re seeking isn’t what they are reaping,
be mindful the seeds that you sow.
The politicians, physicians, and holy men, get straight to the front of the line.
While lesser men stumble in clothes far more humble,
drowning their sorrows in wine.
I’ll travel alone on this pilgrimage;
I don’t fit into any of these robes.
Too poor to keep up with the privileged
and too clever to plod on with the slow.
It takes not the teachings of wise men
or stories from ages of old.
To know to be kind to the needy,
while walking life’s Jericho Road.

Sitting upon my grandma’s lap, I looked into her eyes, the crystal blue that
mirrored too the days that passed her by.
I felt the softness of her arms, the warmth of her embrace, the kindest smile I’ve
ever known, gently rested on her face.
Her hair shined bright like silver with sparkling tinsel hues that caught the sun
and warmed us both on that Sunday afternoon.
She sang to me ancient lullabies as if I were just a babe, her voice was sweet and
practiced, often humming each refrain.
Without a thought I’d asked her, never thinking it was rude, a question that was
on my mind, the sweet unguarded truth…
Grandma, Will I be old and wrinkled too?
Will my hair turn white or grey?
Will I move slow and smile like you, when I get to be your age?
Will my clothes hang big and baggy?
Will I walk without a cane?
Or will I be more like Pop-Pop and have a funny kind of name?
Does it hurt you when the colors fade and the wrinkles start to crease?
Will I wear shawls and sweaters with knitted booties on my feet?
When I close my eyes, will I just fall asleep, no matter where I am?
Will you still come and visit me? Will we still be best friends?
She answered me without a doubt and with a chuckle in her eye.
She smiled and kissed me on the head as she started to reply…
Oh, why… when you get to be my age it seems, time just goes so fast.
Your youth is there one moment, then tomorrow it’s the past.
Yes, you’ll move a little bit slower then… and you’ll get tired too…
and even when you look like me, you’ll still think and talk like you.
You’ll groan and moan when you sit down and bend to tie your shoe.
Your thoughts just won’t work as fast and sometimes you’ll worry too,
but the memories that you keep inside will replay within your mind.
When you’re my age, I’ll be gone, but you’ll remember me in time.
You’ll think of all these songs we sang and the way I make you feel.
You’ll think about days like these and suddenly they’re real.
The memories make us who we are and our love will never end.
Even when I’ve gone away, in our hearts we’ll still be friends.
Take the time to make these memories with your children and theirs too.
Show them how much you love them so they can stop and think of you.
You never know where life will take you or where you’ll turn along the way.
Think about those times you’ve shared,
like you thought of me today.

I went out all night getting candy with this awesome costume of mine…
‘til my sack was so loaded and heavy, that it started to ache in my spine.
Is it me or are these treats getting smaller, almost every year?
If this is the way it keeps going, the fun size might just disappear.
Look at this box of malted milk balls, it only contains four duds!
So short are the Smarties the wrappers read only SMs and RTs,
while the “Nerds” are now only “Nds.”
The shrinking size of the candy isn’t my only concern for sure.
My mom ate all of my Reese’s, down to the pieces
and my jawbreakers rolled right out the door.
My stomach just started aching from eating these sweets all day,
with sugary treats before bedtime, and more sticky snacks on the way.
A breakfast of Twizzlers and Skittles,
a lunch of Milky Ways, Snickers and Spree…
For dinner, I think Jolly Ranchers with gummy bears waiting for me.
